What is AI?

The term AI (artificial intelligence) refers to systems or machines that mimic human intelligence and are capable of improving themselves as they collect data. There are many forms of artificial intelligence, such as chatbots, intelligent assistants, and recommendation engines. Some computer programs have attained the performance levels of human experts and professionals in performing certain tasks. AI is being used across different industries from finance to healthcare.

AI is important because it helps enterprises understand their operations better and performs tasks better than humans. For example, Uber has become one of the largest companies in the world by using computer software to connect riders to taxis.

Artificial neural networks and deep learning artificial intelligence technologies are quickly evolving, primarily because they can process large amounts of data more quickly and accurately than human researchers. AI is good at detail-oriented jobs, reduces the time for data-heavy tasks, delivers consistent results, and is always available.

Types of AI

There are two types of artificial intelligence: weak and strong. Weak artificial intelligence, also known as narrow AI, is used in video games, industrial robots, and personal assistants. In contrast, Strong artificial intelligence systems use fuzzy logic to solve problems autonomously, like self-driving cars.

Artificial intelligence can be categorized into four types: reactive, limited memory, theory-of-mind, and self-aware. Reactive AI tends to be fairly static, unable to learn or adapt to novel situations, and self-aware AI tends to be fully adaptive and aware of its existence.

How is AI used

AI is used in recommendation algorithms, chatbots, and streamlining production processes. It is also used to play games, operate autonomous vehicles, and process language. Artificial intelligence has many applications, including big data, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Where is AI used

AI is currently deployed in numerous sectors, including transportation, manufacturing, finance, health care, education, and urban planning. AI is also used in payment processing, mobile check deposits, insurance, and the recommendation of investment options.

AI-powered Digital Twins

A digital twin powered by artificial intelligence can help industrial companies better understand their operations, providing insights into a variety of plant and process scenarios, revealing where the greatest efficiencies lie, and improving plant uptime by predicting future failures and maintaining asset health efficiently.
