A Comprehensive Guide to the Luxolis 3D Camera Technology

This module uses a stereo pair of cameras to measure depth and capture a color image. 

Stereo cameras are an incredible tool for 3D perception, and they work by using two cameras fixed a specific distance apart, known as the baseline. This distance helps create a triangulation of rays from multiple viewpoints, similar to the way our eyes work. The D455 module integrated with the Luxolis SceneCap 3D boasts a powerful combination of a left imager, a right imager, and an optional infrared projector, which works together seamlessly to create a highly advanced and accurate stereo vision system. 

These cameras capture images of the same scene from slightly different angles, and then the images are compared to find matching pixels or features. Using this information, a disparity image is computed that determines the difference in position for every pixel between the left and right images. Combining this with the baseline of the stereo camera creates a depth image, effectively transforming the stereo camera into a 3D camera. In the Luxolis SceneCap 3D, the depth sensors are located 95 millimeters apart, which provides greater depth accuracy at longer ranges. The alignment of color and depth is significantly improved with the placement of the depth and RGB sensors on the same stiffener, as a color camera is essential for capturing colored 3D models.

The Intel RealSense module used in the camera has an impressive range of up to 6 meters, a field of view of up to 90 degrees, and a depth output resolution of 1280 x 720 at a frame rate of up to 90 fps. The sensor shutter type is a global shutter which means it has a faster capture time and is ideal for scanning moving objects.
